GPS for USAR Operations
The purpose of this course is to examine how maps are used for land navigation and familiarize the student with the practical application of map reading for accurate navigation. By developing simple map skills using the United States Geological Survey (USGS) topographic maps, the student will understand map basics and appreciate the value of handheld GPS units used for land navigation. Topics covered will include basic functions of GPS, GPS cautions and considerations, basic components of GPS, system setup, waypoints, tracks, compass, and “Find” functions. The course will culminate with practical exercises using the US National Grid and practical map exercises.
