Step 1

Meet the Minimum Qualifications

Step 2

Register for Class

Complete the Registration Form. All required forms and tuition are due at the time of registration.

Students who are not already employed as a paid firefighter can only become certified Alabama Firefighters by attending Fire Fighter I/II (recruit school) or Fire Fighter Bridge class at the Alabama Fire College in Tuscaloosa or an AFC Regional Training Center.

Are you a veteran? Registration and Student Services will assist Veterans and dependents of Veterans with information concerning education benefits for which they qualify. Learn how we can help.

Step 3

Attend Mandatory Orientation

This is usually one month prior to the start date of the school. You will receive an email to inform you of the date. Please note: This is mandatory; failure to attend could result in losing your place in the class.

Step 4

Attend Recuit Training

Successfully complete a minimum of 360 hours of training for Fire Fighter I/II or 200 hours of training for Fire Fighter Bridge.

Step 5

Pass the Certification Exams

To be issued Fire Fighter I and II certifications, the candidate must provide documentation of prerequisites, complete required training, successfully complete the cognitive written exams, and successfully complete the practical exams.

In the State of Alabama, paid or partly paid firefighters must earn certification. Successful completion of Fire Fighter I/II or Fire Fighter Bridge does not guarantee employment as a firefighter.
