Pre-Consumption Conditioning Program for Recruit Schools

Fire Chiefs and Training Officers,

Please review the new Alabama Fire College Pre-Consumption Conditioning Program Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), which the Alabama Fire College plans to implement for future recruit school training. There is also a brief summary of the program linked.

The Pre-Consumption Conditioning Program is a structured pre-training program designed to reduce early adverse medical events, including rhabdomyolysis, heat illness, and cardiovascular events, by providing recruits with a progressive physiological on-ramp before consumption/live-fire drills begin. Recruits who have completed CPAT often experience detraining prior to academy start; this program bridges that gap through four phases over 21 days.

A few key points to note:

  • All screening is non-punitive and does not permanently disqualify recruits.
  • Any recruit displaying chest pain, dizziness, confusion, or loss of coordination during any phase must be removed immediately for medical evaluation, regardless of risk score.
  • Any deviations from this SOP would require prior evaluation and written approval from the Alabama Fire College.

We are distributing this program in advance, so departments will have the opportunity to review it and prepare any questions prior to our upcoming Zoom meeting, scheduled for Friday June 26 at 10am. Contact us if you need the meeting link.
