The National Fire Academy (NFA) has expanded its recognition of courses from the Alabama Fire College (AFC) as valid prerequisites for its on-campus programs.
This means that more AFC certifications such as Fire Officer, Fire Instructor, and Hazardous Materials training can now be used to meet eligibility requirements for NFA courses. This development benefits Alabama-based firefighters and emergency responders by providing a more accessible pathway to advanced federal training without the need to retake similar courses.
“Y Codes” are special course numbers used by the National Fire Academy to recognize training classes taught outside their main campus. These codes help keep track of what the classes are, where they’re taught, and who takes them. They make sure the training meets the same standards as classes taught at the academy.
AFC students will be informed by the instructor of the class on the process to request recognition from the NFA for approved classes.
