The National Firefighter Registry (NFR) for Cancer has rolled out several new features aimed at supporting its growing network of participants. These updates offer greater insight into registry data and provide useful tools for firefighters already enrolled in the program.
One of the key additions is the NFR Summary Data Dashboard, which offers an interactive view of registration trends across the U.S. Users can explore data broken down by state, fire service specialty, and other categories. Additional visuals and insights are expected to be added in the future.
Another exciting feature is the Gold Helmet Department map, which highlights departments that have achieved “Gold Helmet” status for their commitment to firefighter health and safety. Currently, over 30 departments are recognized on the map, with more joining regularly.
The NFR web portal has also been updated. Participants can now easily update their department information and print a certificate of completion—useful tools for both personal and professional documentation.
These updates not only improve the user experience but also help reinforce the importance of participation in the NFR’s efforts to better understand cancer risks among firefighters. Fire service professionals are encouraged to explore the new features and share them with their colleagues.
What Is the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer?
The National Firefighter Registry (NFR) for Cancer is a nationwide research effort led by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to better understand the link between firefighting and cancer. Open to all U.S. firefighters—career, volunteer, and wildland—the registry collects health and work history data to study cancer trends in the fire service.
By joining, firefighters help researchers identify risks, improve safety standards, and support prevention efforts. Participation is voluntary, confidential, and open to both active and retired firefighters.
