Fire Fighter I Recertification

The Fire Fighter I Recertification course is designed for Fire Fighters whose certification has lapsed (expired). This recertification course enables the Fire Fighter to test to the level of Fire Fighter I according to the current edition of NFPA 1001: Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications. After successfully completing the certification written and skills tests, all previous certifications held by the Fire Fighter will become active. This course consists of a combination of online course study, drill field practice, and training evolutions that will prepare the Fire Fighter to reenter the fire service.

The NFPA 1010 is a standard published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) that consolidates previous professional qualification standards for firefighters into a single document. It combines NFPA 1001, NFPA 1002, NFPA 1003, and NFPA 1005 to establish criteria for various fire service personnel, including the Alabama Fire College’s Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Fire Fighter, Marine Fire Fighter, and Fire Apparatus Operator: ARFF, Pumper, Aerial, and Mobile Water supply programs.

In response to the 2024 update of NFPA 1010, Standard on Professional Qualifications for Firefighters, our Fire Fighter I and Fire Fighter II courses will transition to: IFSTA’s Essentials of Fire Fighting, Firefighter I, 8th Edition and Essentials of Fire Fighting, Firefighter II, 8th Edition.

This update will also apply to the following courses:

  • Volunteer Fire Fighter
  • Fire Fighter I/II Recruit School
  • Fire Fighter I/II Bridge
  • Fire Fighter I Recertification

These changes will take effect starting June 1, 2026, and will impact course content and certification requirements. For more information regarding Curriculum and Certification Updates, please visit the following link: Curriculum and Certification Updates
