Basic Wildland Fire Fighter
This 16-hour instructor-led course is based on NWCG S-130 and S-190 courses and is distributed and taught primarily by the Alabama Forestry Commission. It will address the foundational skills universal to all wildland firefighters. The course provides instruction on the primary factors affecting the start and spread of wildfire and the recognition of potentially hazardous wildfire conditions.
After the course, the students will be able to:
- Describe the basic terminology used in wildland fire.
- Describe the elements of the fire tetrahedron.
- Describe the methods of heat transfer.
- Describe the purpose of the Standard Firefighting Orders and watch out for situations.
- Describe the lookouts, communications, escape routes, and safety zones system and how it relates to the Standard Firefighting Orders.
- Describe the various communication methods and tools used for collecting, producing, and distributing information.
- Describe the standards, tools and equipment, and various methods used in fireline construction.
- Describe the methods for extinguishing a fire with or without the use of water.
- Describe/Demonstrate the ability to construct a fireline to the required standards using various methods, tools, equipment, and techniques.
