Detection and Suppression Systems

This 16-hour course provides firefighters with a practical understanding of commercial fire detection and water-based fire suppression systems commonly encountered during emergency responses. Students will learn the operation of fire alarm control panels (FACP), initiating and notification devices, supervisory signals, and the interaction between fire alarm systems and building life safety systems. The course also examines the five primary types of water-based fire suppression systems, system monitoring devices, firefighter responsibilities during automatic alarm activations, system impairments, fire watch requirements, and procedures for safely placing portions of suppression systems in and out of service while minimizing property damage. Emphasis is placed on responder safety, building protection, and incident decision-making.
