Course Delivery Methods
Web-enhanced, Hybrid and Computer Based Training (CBT) courses incorporate the same competencies as courses offered in the traditional classroom on campus; the only difference is in the method of delivery. Instead of attending a course where an instructor provides a lecture and leads a classroom discussion, web-enhanced, hybrid, and CBT courses utilize the internet in various degrees to deliver course content. Using computer technology, students and instructors can overcome the constraints of time, geography, and career commitments.
Traditional (face-to-face) delivery-A traditional (face-to-face) course is one in which instruction is delivered fully on-site with face-to-face interaction between the instructor and student on a designated schedule. A traditional course may make use of computers, the internet or other electronic media in the classroom. Students may be directed to online materials provided by publishers or to other internet accessible sources as part of their course work. Students may need access to a computer.
Rescue Technician: Structural Collapse on campus at the AFC or a Fire Instructor being hosted at a local fire department.
Web-enhanced delivery-A web-enhanced course utilizes the institution’s chosen web-based Learning Management System (AFC Online). Online resources are utilized by the instructor to support delivery of content; all classes meet face-to-face on a designated schedule, whether conducted in the classroom or via video conferencing. Fire Officer II course where the instructor is in a classroom by himself or with students, is using AFC Online to convey course content, and is broadcasting via video conferencing to other remote locations.
Hybrid delivery-A Hybrid course has fewer in-person course meetings than a face-to-face course. A portion of the course is delivered online and a portion is delivered at a designated site on a designated schedule (ex. skills/JPR testing). Students must have access to a computer.
Certified Volunteer 160 course where much of the course content review is completed without an instructor in a given time frame but at the students own pace. End of subject exams are conducted via computer through AFC Online. Skills review and testing is conducted face-to-face with skills proctors.
Computer-based training (CBT)-A CBT is a self-paced course where the primary means of delivery and evaluation is via computer. There is no designated schedule but there are completion deadlines. Students must have access to a computer.
Academic portion of Emergency Vehicle Driver where course content is covered exclusively by the student at the student’s own pace through AFC Online. National Incident Management System (NIMS) training is another example of CBT.
