Fire
Service Leadership: A Learned Skill
A strong partnership
exists between the National Fire Academy
and state fire training systems in order to advance the professional
development of our fire service personnel. This partnership has resulted in
the ongoing development and delivery of courses designed to meet the needs
of today's emergency services.
One of these needs is
effective leadership. This particular need is a critical attribute of
management in any organization. It is especially important in the fire
service, where leadership skills are needed on the fireground as well as in
the fire station. Leadership effectiveness involves many complex factors
that are both organizational and personal.
Leadership is a process
through which an individual influences others toward the accomplishment of
common goals. It is dynamic, ever-changing, situational, evolving and it
often involves a merging of values and perceptions.
The National Fire
Academy three-part leadership training series has gone relatively untapped
here in Alabama.
The series consist of:
Leadership I: Strategies for Company Success. This course addresses problem-solving,
identifying and assessing subordinate needs, conducting meetings and
decision-making.
Leadership II: Strategies for Personal Success. This course deals with ethics, the use
and abuse of power and multiple role management.
Leadership III: Strategies for Supervisory Success. This leadership course covers when
and how to delegate to subordinates, discipline subordinates and apply
coaching/motivating techniques.
This series is available
to assist you in meeting this level of organizational training.
Remember, training is
the key to proficiency, and leadership is a learned skill.
