The Alabama
Fire
College is proud to be the home of the Alabama Firefighter Memorial. The Alabama Joint Fire Council, made up of representatives from
the Alabama
Association of Fire Chiefs, the Alabama Fire Fighters Association, the
Alabama Association of Volunteer Fire Departments and the Professional
Firefighters Association of Alabama unanimously agreed that a monument
should be erected to serve as the official memorial to honor firefighters of
Alabama who have given their lives in the Line-of-Duty and to pay tribute to
those firefighters who heroically serve with pride, courage and
honor.
Afterwards, on June 11, 2003, The House
and Senate of the Alabama Legislature passed a joint resolution designating
the Alabama Firefighter Memorial as the official firefighters memorial for
the State of Alabama.

DESIGNATING THE ALABAMA
FIREFIGHTER MEMORIAL
AS THE OFFICIAL FIREFIGHTER MEMORIAL FOR THE STATE OF ALABAMA

WHEREAS, the Alabama Joint Fire Council unanimously agreed that a monument
should be erected to serve as the official memorial to honor firefighters
who heroically serve with pride, courage, and honor; and
WHEREAS, the Alabama Joint Fire Council is made up of representatives from
the Alabama Association of Fire Chiefs, the Alabama Fire Fighters
Association, the Alabama Association of Volunteer Fire Departments, and the
Professional Firefighters Association of Alabama; and
WHEREAS, the Alabama Joint Fire Council also agreed that the monument should
be placed on the beautifully landscaped ground of the Alabama Fire College
in Tuscaloosa; and
WHEREAS, the Alabama Fire College and the Professional Standards Commission
are responsible for training thousands of paid and volunteer firefighters,
including fire protection personnel, rescue squad members, and emergency
medical personnel throughout the State of Alabama; and
WHEREAS, the Alabama Firefighter Memorial will serve as a symbol of
gratitude to the men and women of the fire service who risk their lives
every day to protect the people of Alabama; and
WHEREAS, designated as a tribute to all of Alabama’s firefighters, the
Alabama Firefighter Memorial consist of a “Walk of Honor,” personalized
bricks allow firefighters, families, and friends of Alabama’s fire service
to be recognized and become part of the memorial, and a life-size bronze
statue of a firefighter in full protective gear; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF
CONCURRING, That we hereby extend our most sincere gratitude to all men and
women who stand ready every day to put their lives on the line when the
alarm bell rings an do further designate the Alabama Firefighter Memorial,
located at the Alabama Fire College, Dr. W.L. Langston Campus in Tuscaloosa,
as the official firefighter memorial for the State of Alabama.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be provided to the
members of the Alabama Joint Council and to the Alabama Fire College for
appropriate display.

The memorial
will serve as a symbol of gratitude to the men and women of the fire service
who risk their lives every day to protect the people of Alabama. The Joint
Fire Council also agreed that the monument should be placed on the
beautifully landscaped grounds of the Alabama
Fire
College in
Tuscaloosa and that a relief of the monument be placed in the East Wing at
the State Capitol in Montgomery. The memorial will be an original bronze
work of art consisting of a life-size firefighter in full protective
clothing performing fire extinguishment.
“After the events of September 11, we feel even more that the States’ Fire
Service deserves a memorial honoring those who have served so courageously”,
said Dwight Graves, Chair of the Alabama Joint Fire Council.
The memorial will have a “Walk of
Honor” to include the sponsorship of personalized bricks to allow
firefighters, families and friends of Alabama’s fire service to be
recognized and become part of the memorial. The Memorial’s design limits
the number of bricks available.
