General Information 

You must complete a registration form (pdf) and other required forms (Notice of Employment (pdf) and Physical Statement (pdf) and CPAT Verification Form.  Listed below is a price list for books and clothing.  Please note when using a purchase order number, you will need to have separate numbers for Shelton State Bookstore and the Alabama Fire College.

Please note the following policy requirements regarding Recruit Training Schools conducted in Tuscaloosa. 

  1. Candidate Physical Ability Test:  As prescribed by NFPA 1201, job-related physical performance requirements shall be used to select candidates.  Therefore, the firefighter candidate shall successfully complete the Fire Service Join Labor Management Wellness/Fitness Initiative Program – Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) prior to entering a minimum standards course for Fire Fighter I.  For information on orientation and testing for CPAT, contact Kevin Pate, Chief of Training at 205.391.3741.
  2. Orientation:  Due to the number of individual departments represented in the school, please submit an affidavit attesting to no less than two (2) hours of instruction on your department rules and regulations for each student.
  3. Academic Testing:  The student must pass each end-of-subject exam with a minimum score of 70%. One (1) make-up exam will be allowed per subject up to three (3) subjects. Failure of more than three (3) end-of-subject exams will be grounds for dismissal as student is displaying inability to comprehend subject material or has a lack of interest.
  4. Practical Exams:  Each student must successfully complete ALL practical evolutions required. 
  5. Test Material:  Each student must have a copy of IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting, 4th edition and Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, 8th edition.
  6. Daily physical training will be required: White AFC t-shirts and red AFC shorts for warm days and red sweats for cold days are required. These can be purchased from the Shelton State Community College Bookstore. The student will need a good pair of running shoes, preferably white or black. Purchasing more than one outfit is recommended.
  7. Tardiness will not be tolerated during school. 

Students are required to bring their own NFPA approved turnout great, SCBA and PASS device for training sessions.
