Rescue Technician: Surface Water
A
certification course
accredited by the Pro Board.
Meets the requirements of the surface water rescue chapter of NFPA 1006,
Standard for Rescue Technician Professional Qualifications, 2003 edition.
See the course syllabus.A 44-hour course combining classroom as well as field instruction that will
include, but will not be limited to: water hydrology, preplanning water
sites, safety, self-rescue, boat operations, in-water/shore-based rescues,
rope techniques, highline rescues, and command of water incidents. A good
understanding of rope techniques and knots is highly recommended, but not a
requirement.
Performance Evaluation Skills
Testing is required for this course.
Note: This is a very
physically demanding course which requires you to be in good physical
condition and you must be a competent swimmer.
Special equipment required:
Water helmet or climbing
helmet with holes for draining (no
fire fighting helmets), wetsuit or drysuit, water boots or
tennis shoes, water gloves, knife, whistle and Coast Guard approved Type
III personal flotation device, and 2 forms of light (a
flashlight and glow stick for night drill).
