Shaping the Future (NFA)
This National Fire
Academy course, Shaping the Future (STF), will focus on the skills and techniques
that a mid-level manager needs to provide leadership and direction for his
or her fire department.
In the
first module, students will focus on identifying opportunities or problems.
This includes such topics as: Discussions on the use of environmental
scanning as a tool; the concept of paradigm shifts; and methods to reframe
problems accurately.
The
focus of the second module is to mobilize people into problem solving as a
group, instead of using only the traditional fire service groups. This
includes such topics as: Brain writing and whole brain thinking;
problem-solving strategies; a discussion of benchmarking; and the need to
involve resources outside the fire department and government.
The
third module will focus on managing change and the need to quantify,
justify, and communicate decisions so they will be implemented effectively.
Topics included are: Why people resist change; how to overcome that
resistance; and monitoring and evaluating the change before, during, and
after its implementation.
Necessary forms used by departments in order to request and schedule
courses for their areas. These forms are not for the field student.
