RECOGNIZING AND
IDENTIFYING HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
The
Recognizing and Identifying Hazardous Materials (RIHM) course is designed to
provide the student with an opportunity to gain an insight into the methods
of identifying hazardous materials. Placards, labels and other signs and
symptoms provide emergency response personnel with a visual means of
detecting the presence of hazardous materials.
Placards and labels can provide general hazard recognition by way of:

Colored background
-
Respective hazard class symbol
-
United Nations hazard class number
-
Hazard class designation or the four-digit identification number
-
Placards and labels provide information as to special hazards of the
material involved
Recommended for all emergency response personnel, this course may serve to
introduce new material or as a refresher.
Necessary forms used by departments in order to request and schedule
courses for their areas. These forms are not for the field student.
