RECOGNIZING AND IDENTIFYING HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

The Recognizing and Identifying Hazardous Materials (RIHM) course is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to gain an insight into the methods of identifying hazardous materials. Placards, labels and other signs and symptoms provide emergency response personnel with a visual means of detecting the presence of hazardous materials.

Placards and labels can provide general hazard recognition by way of:

  • Colored background
  • Respective hazard class symbol
  • United Nations hazard class number
  • Hazard class designation or the four-digit identification number
  • Placards and labels provide information as to special hazards of the material involved

Recommended for all emergency response personnel, this course may serve to introduce new material or as a refresher.

Necessary forms used by departments in order to request and schedule courses for their areas. These forms are not for the field student.

Course Hours:  4
Prerequisite:  None
Reference Text Required:  National Fire Academy Student Manual included at no additional charge, when available.
