Hazardous Materials Technician
A
certification course accredited by the Pro Board.
Meets the requirements of the technician level of NFPA 472, Standard
for Emergency on Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous
Materials Incidents, 2002 edition.

Designed for the student already certified at the Hazardous Materials
Awareness and Operations levels, this course develops the skills already learned and
provides in-depth training in the mitigation of hazardous materials
incidents. Through both classroom and practical training the student becomes
familiar with: health and safety issues, incident management, hazard and
risk analysis, personal protective clothing, and decontamination.

Must bring NFPA compliant turnout gear,
SCBA, and PASS device.

Specific requirements
for field delivery of this course is in addition to the requirements for
field delivery of any course. Categories of specific requirements are
related to (A) facilities and equipment, (B) registration procedures and
certification/testing fees, and (C) instructor requirements.
A.
Facility and equipment approval
Approved
training center. The facility must meet the definition of an
approved Fire Training Center as specified in Section III (General
Regulations and Administrative Procedures, 360-X-1.01) of the 2003
version of Policies, Procedures, and Regulations of the Commission,
available at
www.alabamafirecollege.org/regulations.htm. Paragraphs 9
and 10 describe the application process to become an approved Fire
Training center.
Required
equipment and props. The facility must have the equipment and props
listed for the particular course for which approval will be requested.
Required equipment and props will be the same as used for classes in
Tuscaloosa.
Hazardous Materials Equipment List
Site
inspection. When the facility is ready for an approval inspection of
the local site and equipment, the host fire department will send a
letter requesting a site inspection. Allow 2 weeks for an inspection
to be scheduled. A site visit will be scheduled to inspect the equipment
and props before site approval can be given. The site inspection will be
conducted by two AFC staff members who are familiar with the equipment
and prop requirements for the course.
B. Registration
procedures and certification/testing fee
Advance
registration required. For each
approved class for field delivery from this list, the host chief must
conduct advance registration to include checking pre-requisites and the
withdrawal and no-show policies in effect for resident certification
courses. A final roster must be received at the Alabama Fire College
headquarters by the Friday morning before the start of the class. The
certification exams cannot be shipped to any field location if the roster is
not received in advance as specified.
Monitoring and certification fee. The certification courses on this
list for field delivery require that all students pay a $50 monitoring
and certification fee to be paid before the first day of class. This fee
must be received at the Alabama Fire College with the advance
registration final roster and before the tests are prepared and shipped
to the host location.
Student/instructor
ratio. The host facility is responsible for meeting the proper
student/instructor ratio for each course. The student/instructor ratio
for Hazardous Materials Technician is 15:1.
C. Instructor
qualifications
Certifications required. To be approved as an instructor for one of
these courses, the prospective instructor must have the following
certifications: Fire Instructor I and Hazardous Materials Technician.
Requires instructor awareness course.
An instructor applying to teach field delivery of any of these courses for
the first time must attend two days of
Instructor Awareness courses at the
Alabama Fire College.
