Fire Instructor I, II, III Pre-Course Materials

Course Description/Objectives

Pre-requisites: Certified Fire Fighter I or Certified Volunteer Fire Fighter.

Description:
A course designed to train participants to teach a class from a prepared lesson plan.  The student will give several presentation during the week, all leading to the final fifteen minute graded presentation on the final day of class.

Goals:
The purpose of this course is to specify, in terms of performance objectives, the minimum requirements for professional service as a fire instructor. This course shall cover the requirements for the Fire Instructor I level of progression.

Objectives:
After completion of the Fire Instructor I course, the candidate must be able to perform the following job performance requirements:

  • Assemble course materials so that lesson plan, all materials, resources, and equipment needed to deliver the lesson are obtained.
  • Prepare training records and report forms so that required reports are accurately completed and submitted in accordance with the procedures.
  • Review instructional materials so that elements of the lesson plan, learning environment, and resources that need adaptation are identified.
  • Adapt a prepared lesson plan so that the needs of the student and the objectives of the lesson plan are achieved.
  • Organize the classroom, laboratory or outdoor learning environment so that lighting, distractions, climate control or weather, noise control, seating, audiovisual equipment, teaching aids, and safely are considered.
  • Present prepared lessons so that the methods indicated in the plan are used and the stated objectives or learning outcomes are achieved.
  • Adjust presentation so that class continuity and the objectives or learning outcomes are achieved.
  • Adjust to differences in learning styles, abilities and behaviors so that lesson objectives are accomplished, disruptive behavior is addressed, and safe learning environment is maintained.
  • Operate audiovisual equipment and demonstration devices so that the equipment functions properly.
  • Utilize audiovisual materials so that the intended objectives are clearly presented, transitions between media and other parts of the presentation are smooth, and media is returned to storage.
  • Administer oral, written, and performance tests so that the testing is conducted according to procedures and the security of the material is maintained.
  • Grade student oral, written, or performance tests so the examinations are accurately graded and properly secured.
  • Report test results so that the results are accurately recorded, the forms are forwarded according to procedure, and unusual circumstances are reported.
  • Provide evaluation feedback to students so that the feedback is timely, specific enough for the student to make efforts to modify behavior, objective, clear, and relevant; include suggestions based on the data.
     
Please note: Test questions are taken from the instructor's lecture AND the assigned reading. While some questions from the assigned reading may not be covered during class due to time constraints, students are responsible for knowing and understanding ALL information assigned in the syllabus.

Instructional methods: Classroom instruction

Course Schedule

(Tentative, subject to change depending on the progress of the class)

Day One:
Introduction and Orientation; 3 minute presentations; challenges of instruction; safety; legal considerations; prepare for next day’s presentations

Day Two:
Psychology of learning; Planning Instruction; 5 minute presentation (fun topic)

Day Three:
Lesson Plan Development; Instructional Delivery; 5 minute presentation (EMS or Fire Topic)

Day Four:
15 minute Final Presentation; Testing and Evaluation; Media and Technology

Day Five:
15 minute Final Presentation; Review; Critique; Certification Test

Course Policies

Attendance:
Students are expected to attend all classes. Failure to appear in class for a scheduled activity will be considered an absence, unless prior permission is received from the instructor. For any absence to be excused, it must be accompanied by written description of extenuating circumstances. For a certification course, students must attend all classes to obtain certification.

Tardiness:
Students must adhere to class schedules. Students are required to be punctual for all classes and class activities. Classes will begin promptly at the scheduled time unless specific instructions are given otherwise.

Class participation:
This course will involve discussion, questions and answers on the materials, and case study. Class participation is expected from all students.

Safety:
Safety of the student is top priority to the Alabama Fire College. Students must adhere to safety regulations while attending a class on or off the Fire College campus. At the Fire College campus, safety instructions are posted in every classroom, as well as escape routes and tornado actions.

Academic misconduct:
Academic misconduct or dishonesty such as cheating and plagiarism is not permitted in class. Suspected cases of academic misconduct will be reported to the Executive Director. Conduct detrimental to the fire service on or off campus will not be tolerated. We will investigate any complaints, and if the complaint is valid the student will be dismissed and his/her agency will be notified.

Grading:
Letter grades are assigned according to the following system for all certification courses for which students have registered.
A – Excellent (90-100)
B – Good (80-89)
C – Average (70-79)
Satisfactory grades for certification are A, B, or C. A mark of AU is assigned for course work performed as an audit.

Certification:
There will be an examination for state certification provided by the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission. An overall score of 70% is required to the successful completion of this examination. Re-tests may be taken after 30 days and within 12 months of the date of course completion. The Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission is accredited by the National Professional Qualifications System (NPQS). The Executive Director has generously decided to fund national registration and certification for all successful students, so each student will automatically receive certification from the NPQS upon successful completion of the course and exam.
