Risk Watch

Risk Watch® is an injury prevention program for children in preschool through grade eight. Developed by the National Fire Protection Association, Risk Watch® is designed to help children and families create safer homes and communities by teaching those skills and knowledge they need to make positive choices about their personal safety and well being. Risk Watch® seeks to prevent the major injuries which threaten children in this age group.

Many fire departments in Alabama have acquired Risk Watch and are implementing it in their communities. The Alabama Fire College sponsors the Risk Watch program in 28 communities, reaching more than 30,000 Alabama children.

This site supports communities who are using the Risk Watch curriculum to promote injury prevention. Below you will find more information on these Risk Watch subjects.

What is Risk Watch®?
Risk Watch® is the first comprehensive injury prevention curriculum available for use in schools. Developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Lowe's Home Safety Council in collaboration with a distinguished coalition of national experts, the private sector, and safety advocates, Risk Watch® has been field-tested successfully in the United States and Canada. It is presented in five teaching modules with lessons that address the eight risk areas that are responsible for the injuries and deaths of the greatest number of kids each year. The modules have been designed for maximum flexibility so that the program can be taught as a stand-alone unit or easily integrated into core curriculum subjects such as health, language arts or physical education.

Each of the following topics is presented in every Risk Watch® module:
Motor Vehicle Safety
Fire and Burn Prevention
Choking, Suffocation and Strangulation Prevention
Poisoning Prevention
Falls Prevention
Firearms Injury Prevention
Bike and Pedestrian Safety
Water Safety

A few bumps and bruises are an unavoidable by-product of a healthy childhood. But most serious injuries are not inevitable. Traffic injuries, drownings, fire, scald burns, chokings, poisoning, and falls are not random accidents they are predictable and preventable. With education, motivation and the support of caring adults, children can learn to be Much safer.

Our commitment to this goal is crucial, because each year preventable injuries and deaths exact a terrible toll. Every year in the United States, one-quarter of all children ages 14 and under are hurt seriously enough to require medical attention. Each time a child is injured or killed by something that could easily have been prevented, everyone suffers - the child, his or her family, classmates and friends, and the entire community. The time for Risk Watch® has come.
