Emergency Vehicle Driver
Training
Every
year nearly 100 deaths and 100,000 injuries happen to fire fighters during
training or on actual calls. Many of these injuries and fatalities happen
while responding to or coming from a scene. With this in mind, the Alabama
Fire College worked with Volunteer Fireman’s Insurance Services (VFIS) to
conduct an Emergency Vehicle Driver Training (EVDT) Train-the-Trainer. On
March 10th and 11th, twenty-six firefighters and
training officers from across Alabama came to the Alabama Fire College to
take part in this excellent safety training.
This EVDT program was
developed to allow the emergency vehicle operator (EVO) who wishes to become
an instructor in this intense program, the opportunity to teach other
operators that there are other options available to them. The program also
prepares your operators to become better professional emergency vehicle
operators when it involves their own personal safety of their crew, their
patient, and the community they are serving.
Dave
Love was the instructor for this two-day, intense driver training
course. Chief Love has years of experience in driver training and safety.
Dave is an Education Specialist for ESECG, a division of VFIS. Dave is
responsible for the national and international delivery of educational and
training programs, curriculum development, and information analysis.
Dave recently retired after 30 years of service as Chief of the Department
of Fire Rescue Services for the City of York, Pennsylvania. He started his
career in 1970 as a firefighter, Instructor, Emergency Medical Technician
and has held the ranks of Lieutenant, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, and
Chief of Department.
He is currently a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and
the International Society of Fire Service Instructors. He is a 1979 graduate
of Harrisburg Area Community College
and serves as a Senior Fire Instructor for the State of Pennsylvania. He
continues to conduct seminars on various fire service related topics in the
United States, Canada, and most recently Iceland. He has served on the Fire
Service Advisory Board for Harrisburg
Area Community College, liaison to the Regional Terrorist Taskforce, and
serves currently on the NFPA Technical Committee on Fire Service
Occupational Safety and Health.
