As
of June 1, 2008, the Volunteer Firefighter course will
undergo several changes. In the past, Block III was
First Responder which now has been changed to a
pre-requisite to meet 2002 NFPA 1001. Therefore, the 40
hour First Responder course must be successfully
completed prior to entry into a Volunteer Firefighter
160 course.
The old version of Block IV included
Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations along with
Public Education, Fire Control, and Fire Prevention.
Block IV is now 40 hours of Hazardous Materials Awareness and
Operations which includes the ProBoard/IFSAC
certification testing for Hazardous Materials Awareness
and Operations. The other “old” block IV course topics
were moved into Block III. Additional hours have been
added to multiple subjects in all other blocks. New
paperwork, including the
Field Course Application Forms for each Block of the Volunteer
160, has been updated to reflect the changes and is
available on the website. The updated Progress Record
Forms with the required hours and the course syllabus
are also available online with the information for the
new 160 course.
Changes to the Volunteer 160 course have
been made to address the issue of Firefighter I pre-entry
requirements that include medical training and to
address the additional training competencies added in
NFPA 472 (Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations).
These changes will also facilitate volunteer entrance
into the career “Bridge” program.
