New Fire College CPAT policy and requirements
effective June 1, 2005
The
Alabama Fire College is implementing a
new policy and requirements regarding CPAT. This policy will be effective
June 1, 2005. In addition to the policy, the new CPAT Verification Form
(revised 3/28/2005) is
required for all FF I/II students as it now reflects the changes of the new
policy. The
policy is printed below as intended.
New
CPAT form
Alabama Fire College Policy Regarding CPAT
If a fire department is
sending an already-employed fire fighter recruit for the Candidate
Physical Ability Test (CPAT) anywhere in Alabama, that fire department
MUST have an IAFF-issued CPAT license issued in its own name, and
provide the license number on the CPAT form. This is a requirement of the
IAFF as owner of the copyright to CPAT. The Alabama
Fire
College cannot accept CPAT results without this license information if the
recruit was already employed at the time of taking CPAT. A recruit cannot
begin recruit school without valid CPAT results.
The effective date for this
license requirement is
June 1, 2005.
Alabama Fire College Staff are available to assist fire departments in
applying for a CPAT license. CPAT providers must also have their own CPAT
license from IAFF.
The CPAT license requirement
applies to recruits who are already employed. It does not apply if
the candidate is taking CPAT as a pre-employment physical fitness test.
Employment at the time of taking the test is the condition requiring the
employing fire department to have a license.
Fire departments testing or
sending employed fire fighter recruits for CPAT do not have to provide
license numbers if they are listed on the IAFF license web page at
www.iaff.org/safe/content/wellness/statelist.htm. As of March 1, 2005, this
list included fire departments in Anniston,
Dothan, Fort Payne,
Huntsville, Northport, Opelika,
Phoenix City,
Prattville, Rocky Ridge, and Selma. The fire chiefs of state fire
departments have the legal responsibility to complete all requirements
necessary to assure that each fire fighter recruit becomes certified within
the first 12 months of employment.
Fire College
staff can provide guidance regarding the transportability study required for
a license. Contact Bart Marshall at 205.391.3753 or by email

In addition, effective June
1, 2005 it will be a requirement that for any CPAT test results to be
accepted by the Alabama
Fire College, the CPAT test site
must notify the Fire College in
writing of the place and date of testing at least 30 days in advance for
purposes of possible monitoring. If notice is not given, CPAT results will
not be accepted.

notifications to:
