Commission Meeting Schedule

Policies, Procedures, and Regulations of the Commission

Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission

A new agenda items policy
The deadline for any public request for adding a business item to the Commission agenda is 45 days prior to the date of the Commission meeting. The public request must be in writing, describe the need for discussing the subject,  and describe any request for action.

Business items not submitted by the agenda deadline can still be presented to the Commission under the agenda headings of “New Business” [from Commissioners] or “Business from Visitors.” However, it should be understood that items not added to the agenda in advance are less likely to result in immediate Commission action before all relevant information can be assembled, disseminated, and considered.

Explanation of Commission Agenda Considerations

The Commission

The Alabama Fire Fighters Personnel Standards and Education Act, which established the Alabama Fire College, specified a Commission of seven members. Their functions and duties are spelled out in the Act; they have the responsibility for providing for all of the mandates of the Act.

Major responsibilities include certifying fire protection personnel with respect to their competence to perform fire service duties at various defined levels of  responsibility, and also certifying fire fighting and education programs as having attained the minimum required standards affecting them and prescribed by the Commission.

Commissioners are appointed in the following manner:

  • One member designated by the Professional Fire Fighter's Association of Alabama
  • One member designated by the Alabama Firemen's Association.
  • The state fire marshal or his designee.
  • Four members appointed by the governor.

The Commission meets in regular session in different locations each quarter, on the third Wednesday of January, April, July, and October.
