Certification expiration policy:
Did you know that your Fire Fighter I and Volunteer Fire Fighter certification expires one (1) year after leaving the fire service (your date of termination)? You may be eligible for certification upon re-entry into the fire service. Please consult the Policies, Procedures, and Regulations of the Commission for more information.

Certification reciprocity policy:
The Alabama Fire College accepts certifications from a Pro Board- or IFSAC-accredited agency as pre-requisite for a higher-level Alabama certification course. Present copies of your verifiable certificates from another accredited agency as part of the registration process.

Recognition of Fire Fighter I certification from another agency as part of the mandatory certification for fire department employment in Alabama is more restricted due to requirements in Code of Alabama 36-31-1 through 36-32-12 and regulations of the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission. More information and procedures are available through the link below.

Certificate replacement policy:
Individuals certified by the Alabama Fire College may receive a replacement or duplicate certificate by written request providing full information for verifying the original certification and by payment of a $15.00 replacement fee. Payment may be by check or credit card (VISA and MasterCard). Forward written request and payment to Kim Davis, Certification Coordinator, Alabama Fire College, 2501 Phoenix Drive, Tuscaloosa, AL 35405. In order to avoid the need for a retest, students are urged to purchase the required textbooks and begin reading them prior to the start of the first class. Course syllabus files on the web site should help guide students on what to begin studying prior to the class. Additional study each night between classes further prepares students for the initial exam. The text of the new policy is shown below:

Retest policy and schedule:
If a student fails to pass a certification exam, the student may request one retest to be taken between 30 days after the original test and before 12 months have passed from the end of the course. Retests are available only by prior approval. Students appearing to take a scheduled retest must show a drivers license or other acceptable photo identification.

There is a processing fee of $25.00 for all retests. The student must call to request a retest and make full payment by cash, check, or credit card to be paid or be received at the Alabama Fire College at least one week prior to the intended retest date. If a retest is scheduled and payment is made, but the student fails to appear to take the retest, then the processing fee is forfeited. To request a retest, call the toll-free training hotline: 1-800-241-2467.
