CPAT: Candidate Physical Ability Test

Notice:  CPAT Policy Effective June 1, 2005

The Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission adopted the following policy at the April 17, 2002 quarterly meeting:

Candidate Physical Ability Test Standard for Fire Fighter I Training

As prescribed by the Commission, job-related physical performance requirements shall be used to select candidates. Therefore, the fire fighter candidate shall successfully complete the Fire Service Joint Labor Management Wellness/Fitness Initiative Program-Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) or other approved validated physical ability evaluation prior to entering a minimum standards course for Fire Fighter I.

     The physical ability evaluation shall be valid for one (1) year.

     Effective date of the Candidate Physical Ability Test was January 1, 2003.

The Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission requires as proof of successful completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) that the Official CPAT Form be submitted when a candidate registers for any recruit school within Alabama.

Overview
"The overall consensus found the test to be a good predictor of an applicant’s ability to perform basic fire fighting tasks. The Technical Committee was confident that the ability test would provide the fire service with a physically competent recruit."
