Information for CPAT Test Site Administrators
Quality standards
CPAT was conceived and set up to be a job-related test of a candidate’s
physical ability to complete the required recruit training and perform the
duties of a fire fighter. It was created as a reasonable test that could be
legally defended. The best legal defense of the CPAT is for every test site
to administer CPAT exactly as it was intended and described in the CPAT
manual developed by the Fire Service Joint Labor Management
Wellness/Fitness Initiative. This includes built-in quality standards that
were specified by the original Initiative Task Force. The CPAT manual
describes procedures, dimensions, and time periods for each of the eight
CPAT tasks and for CPAT as a whole. There must be no variation from any of
the published criteria. Any site found to be administering CPAT with
questionable quality standards, risks having all results from that site
rejected by the
Alabama Fire College
and other recruit schools.
License required
CPAT is a copyrighted test program of the Fire Service Joint Labor
Management Wellness/Fitness Initiative. The test description, layout, and
CPAT name cannot be used without a license issued by the International
Association of Fire Fighters. The license obligates the test administrator
to conduct the test exactly as described in the CPAT manual. Find contact
information for the IAFF CPAT office at:

Recordkeeping
CPAT site administrators in Alabama
must maintain a master record of all CPAT candidates taking each CPAT,
whether successful or unsuccessful. For Alabama Fire College purposes the
individual’s pass/fail records must be kept available for verification,
during the one (1) year which the exam results are valid. A record retention
policy after the one (1) year is a local prerogative. Every successful
candidate must be given an official signed Alabama Fire College CPAT Form
attesting to successful completion.
Fees for administering
CPAT
Assessing administrative overhead fees to recoup some or all of the costs
for conducting a CPAT remains a local decision. The
Alabama Fire College charges a $25.00 fee to the individual for
administering CPAT.
CPAT Form
You must use the official Alabama Fire College
and Personnel Standards Commission Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
Form when conducting the CPAT examination. Every candidate who
successfully completes CPAT must be given a copy of this verification of
successful completion, signed by the CPAT Administrator. The candidate
will then have his/her employing fire chief sign before submitting to the
Alabama Fire College. Verification of successful completion of CPAT must
be made available to the Alabama Fire College
upon request.
